Xochitl together with the Ph.D. student Michael Kriegl is hosting Session 9: “Understanding social-ecological systems: Towards sustainable management of marine resources” at this year’s ICYMARE on the 26th and 27th of August. The main goal of the conference is to give room to young marine researchers to present their work and to generate a network of young scientists that are aiming to lead the scientific research in the future.

The conference was supposed to take place in Bremerhaven, Germany; however, due to COVID-19, it was decided to conduct it virtually. Nevertheless, the new virtual modality allowed young scientists from everywhere in the world to participate. Presenters from Europe, Africa, Asia, and Latin America contributed to Session 9 with innovative, high-quality interdisciplinary research showing the importance of taking a holistic approach to marine conservation. In the session participants also engaged in recent scientific discussions questioning modern approaches such as Ecosystem-based management or the social-ecological approach itself.

Xochitl’s is hoping to be able to attend next year’s ICYMARE 2021 in Berlin, Germany on May 22-24th.
