William Cheung visits FOL and gives a seminar in Vigo
From December 2nd to 4th of 2019, we had the pleasure of hosting Professor William Cheung and Vicky Lam from the Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries, British Columbia (Canada). This was a wonderful opportunity for the FOL team to work directly with William and to discuss future collaborations with UBC, and for William and Vicky to get to know Galicia and the small-scale fisheries sector first hand. Having the PhD student Juliano Palacios visiting FOL, gave us a great opportunity to link the University of British Columbia Changing Ocean Research Unit (CORU) with the Future Oceans Lab. William Cheung is Juliano‘s PhD supervisor and both are working in the implications of shifting stocks for the ecology and management of trans boundary fisheries.
William’s visit schedule included scientific meetings with UVigo community, networking events, and site visits. The research community had the chance to attend William’s scientific conference within the DOMAR program, where he talked about the new DIVERSE model, and its applications to project the future of global seafood sustainability under climate change. You can now access the conference in this link. With FOL, William and Vicky visited the fish market at the Port of Vigo, and the Arousa Bay, where we could explore the mussel rafts, and see how the artisanal fishers work, guided by Gabriel, a professional fisherman.
For this visit FOL counted with the financial support of the University of Vigo and the Marine Research Centre of the University of Vigo (CIM).
